The history of war machines, hand-in-hand with the history of armed conflict, is intrinsically tied to the history of civilization and Man’s quest for the basic things in life.
The army most likely to win would be the army most invested in tactics and weaponry. Over the centuries those weapons ranged from the bow and arrows of the Greeks and Romans and the chariots that carried them, to armor, swords and chain mail. But one technological development left them all behind – the invention of gunpowder. Since then, the advances in weaponry have been both awe-inspiring, and frightening. Muskets gave way to rifles, then shotguns, and finally the semi-auto and automatic weapons used in modern warfare.
