What is ATF FFL eZ Check?

The ATF FFL eZ Check system is a quick fire way for a Federal Firearms Licensee to check the validity of an individual's Federal Firearms License prior to the shipping or disposing of a firearm. The ATF FFL EZ Check forms part of The National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) which determines if prospective firearms or explosives buyers' name and birth year match those of a person who is not eligible to buy, which was mandated by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (Brady Law) of 1993 and launched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1998.


How Does it Work?

Trust FFL recommends going to the ATF FFL eZ Check website, where you will be able to accurately identify an FFL holders information.


Federal Fire License eZ Check, 4 easy steps

Step 1

Head to the login page of the site, which you can access here: FEL eZ CheckFederal Fire License

Step 2

You will see a page with the title Federal Firearms License Search, below you will see two active blocks followed by three further boxes marked with “X” and another active box. You need to enter the first 3 digits and the last 5 digits of the FFL being verified in the blocks provided. FFL Ez Check Syestem pic.1

Step 3

Once this has been done, simply click the SUBMIT button. Afterwards, the License Number, Expiration Date, License Name, Trade Name, Premises Address, and Mailing Address of the licensee being verified will appear. FFL Ez Check Syestem pic.2

Step 4

If you need to download a list of all active FFL’s, you can get access to a formatted text file. To do this the system requires that the requesting FFL provide its 15-digit FFL number. FFL Ez Check Syestem pic.3FFL Ez Check Syestem pic.4


Important Information

Remember there is an exception regarding persons licensed as collectors (type 03s) or ammunition manufacturers (type 06s), so the above information will not appear. Also, if the licensee being validated has requested and obtained a Letter of Continuing Authorization (LOA), the date the LOA was issued by ATF and the expiration date of the LOA will be displayed. If the certified FFL copy does not match the information shown by FFL eZ Check, then it is highly advised that you contact ATF immediately. Please note that the ATF FFL eZ Check system will not identify Type 03 Collector of Curio and Relic licenses or Type 06 Manufacturer of Ammunition licenses.


Why Use ATF FFL EZ Check?

Under United States law, it is not essential for Federal Firearms License holders to use ATF FFL eZ Check; however, many Federal Firearms Licensees have made it routine to check the various FFL’s they deal with on a weekly basis, as a way to ensure accuracy, especially when the information is difficult to understand or the licence has the possibility of being tampered with. One major aspect which has made using ATF FFL eZ Check a priority for Federal Firearms Licensees, is in the prevention of fraudulent activity, as there have been a number of cases of forged Federal Firearms Licenses, with the ATF system, it can make a previously arduous process simple.
